The Sprite Slam Dunk
contest is the ultimate form of self-expression in basketball. And this year
the crossroads of sport, art and street culture met.
Sprite partnered with
legendary artist Futura to bring his art to center court. At NBA All-Star 2014,
Futura's canvas became the basketballs themselves, which were featured
throughout the weekend.
Futura is an iconic
American artist who made a name for himself as one of the forefathers of the
street art movement in New York City in the early 1970s. By the 1980s he was
exhibiting his work in fine art galleries alongside some of the most well-known
artists, and is credited with helping street art move to the mainstream.
Today, Futura remains a
major force in art and design as he continues to innovate and elevate the game.
Futura was immediately
drawn to the opportunity to create a ball designed for Sprite brand ambassador
and NBA superstar LeBron James.
This ball captures the
inspiration behind LeBron's relentless thirst for more and is autographed by
